Why is this a Problem?
Unauthorised users can view audio and video without your knowledge thereby breaching your privacy. Illegally recorded footage is also known to have been used in many blackmail cases. The surveillance information from hacked CCTV can then be used or passed on to others to know when it is best to attack a property. Assailants can then remotely disable any recording if they intend to infiltrate your property. You may not be concerned about the privacy of a camera at your front door recording the street but it can also be used by attackers as a back door in to the rest of your network and home or business computer. You may not realise that all the devices in your home that connect to the internet are basically computers that run an operating system like your laptop or phone and are susceptible to many of the same attacks. The difference is that most people will update their computer every month or so and install updates on their phone when prompted but ignore all their other devices like CCTV, thermostats or even televisions. What can you do? These are some of the most common issues we see in poorly secured systems. Not changing the default passwords. Not using a secure password on devices. Not using a secure Wi-Fi network. Not using HTTPS where available. Not using a network firewall or IPS. Don't place cameras or the Network Video Recorder in the router DMZ. Not updating the firmware.
